Durham recorded their first win of the league season with a hard-fought 10.5–7.5 victory over Cumbria at Durham City Golf Club in the second match of the campaign.
Following an encouraging 9–9 draw away to Lancashire in May, Durham welcomed Cumbria knowing another strong performance would be needed. In challenging, windy conditions throughout the day, the two sides were closely matched, with the outcome ultimately decided by the morning foursomes.
Durham made an excellent start, taking the foursomes session 4.5–1.5 to establish a valuable early advantage. Cumbria responded strongly in the afternoon singles, but the teams could not be separated, sharing the 12 matches equally at six points apiece.
That meant Durham's superiority in the morning session proved decisive, securing a deserved 10.5–7.5 victory and valuable league points.
The highlight of the day came from Lewis Rowley of Blackwell Grange Golf Club, who earned his county colours. Remarkably, Lewis achieved this distinction in only his fourth appearance for Durham, a tremendous accomplishment and a testament to the impressive standard of golf he has displayed since making his county debut.
Congratulations to all players from both teams for producing such a competitive and sporting contest in difficult conditions, and well done to Durham on an excellent team victory.
