Durham County Golf's premier Stroke Play Championship was played over three outstanding days at Seaton Carew Golf Club from Friday 10th to Sunday 12th July, with 115 of the county's finest golfers competing for one of the region's most prestigious titles.
Blessed with warm summer weather throughout the weekend, the players were also tested by the ever-present coastal breeze, ensuring Seaton Carew provided the perfect championship examination. The course was presented in magnificent condition, rewarding quality golf while demanding accuracy, patience and excellent course management.
After 72 holes of outstanding competition, Gavin Nesbit of Boldon Golf Club produced a superb performance to claim the Durham County Stroke Play Championship with a magnificent seven-under-par total of 277. Playing composed, attacking golf throughout the four rounds, Gavin was a thoroughly deserving champion and can be immensely proud of his achievement.
Finishing runner-up was Steven Wilson (Hartlepool Golf Club), with Jack Burton (Wynyard Golf Club) taking third place. Fourth place went to Richard Aisbitt (Brancepeth Castle Golf Club), while Ryan Riley (Rockliffe Hall Golf Club) completed the top five.
The overall standard of golf was exceptional, with five players finishing under par across the 72-hole championship, highlighting both the quality of the field and the excellent condition of the course.
A championship of this calibre relies on tremendous support behind the scenes, and sincere thanks go to Tom Coulson and his greenkeeping team for presenting Seaton Carew Golf Club at its absolute best. The course received widespread praise from players throughout the weekend, with immaculate greens, outstanding presentation and a championship setup that fairly challenged every competitor while still rewarding positive, well-executed golf.
Durham County Golf Union is also extremely grateful to the committee, staff and members of Seaton Carew Golf Club for once again making the county so welcome and for generously allowing the championship to be played over their superb course and facilities.
Special thanks are due to Alex Shaw, the club manager, whose support and assistance to the County Secretary throughout the planning and staging of the championship were invaluable. Appreciation is also extended to Lee Skidmore, the chef, and all of the Bar and Catering staff for their warm hospitality and excellent service across the three days.
The prize presentation was conducted by County President Bernie Monroe alongside Seaton Carew Golf Club Captain Peter Bianco, bringing an excellent championship to a fitting conclusion.
